Three commissioners of an Oklahoma environmental agency charged with protecting that state's six scenic rivers taped television commercials this week thanking Arkansas-based poultry companies for a donation and recent work in the watershed.
The Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission oversees six scenic rivers in eastern Oklahoma.
Commissioners Bill Blackard and Rick Stubblefield said they did the commercials to recognize the companies for a $1.1 million donation and for efforts to truck poultry litter out of the area.

Washington County : Poultry farmer, regulators come to terms in litter suit
BY ROBERT J. SMITHof the Arkansas Deomocrat Gazette,
Posted on Friday, October 13, 2006:
A Washington County farmer reached a settlement Tuesday with the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission in a lawsuit over state laws about poultry farming.
The state agency never disagreed about what poultry farmer Gene Pharr wanted the court to do.
“As a poultry farmer, he is abiding by the law because he’s following his nutrient management, he’s registering his farm and he applies litter according to his plan,” said Edward Swaim, a Natural Resources Commission attorney.
“We agree that he should be allowed to do that,” he said.

TULSA — Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson is playing politics by demonizing the poultry industry and setting unrealistic goals to reduce pollution levels in his state’s rivers, Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, your attorney general is not interested in resolving the situation. He’s more interested in headlines,” Huckabee said. “It’s a great political platform for him.”

Fourth Circuit Judge Kim Smith ruled Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court that the next chicken litter trial be continued until rulings in the first one are resolved by a higher court.
Trial for the Austin Johnson suit was set for April 23, but that is now continued, and Smith did not set a new date. He ruled for a continuance until the Arkansas Court of Appeals rules on issues brought up on appeal from the September Michael and Beth Green trial, the first in a multi-lawsuit case alleging chicken litter causes cancer.
