Noble Foundation offers new resource for drought stricken farmers, ranchers in Southern Great Plains

NEWS RELEASE
Issued – July 28, 2011

ARDMORE, Okla. – Today the Noble Foundation launched a new online resource to assist farmers and ranchers, who are enduring one of the worst droughts since the Dust Bowl.

Noble Foundation agricultural consultants have developed www.noble.org/drought , a Web page that will serve as a central repository for information to assist agricultural producers in managing their properties and resources throughout this difficult situation.

“This is a once-in-a-generation drought,” said Billy Cook, senior vice president and director of the Agricultural Division. “We haven’t seen this type of heat and lack of precipitation since the record-setting drought of the mid-1950s or even the Dust Bowl. Lloyd Noble established the Noble Foundation to assist producers after he witnessed the devastating effects of the Dust Bowl. Decades later, we’re equipped with the knowledge and experience to help farmers and ranchers to successfully endure this drought.”

Poultry Partners will hold a general membership planning meeting on Monday June 13, 2011 at the Gentry Arkansas Library conference room. The free meal will start at 6 p.m. and the meeting will be held at 7 p.m. All members and potential members are urged to attend. Please RSVP for a food count by calling 918-326-0325 or emailing Bev Saunders at sscattle2@yahoo.com.

The Library is located at 105 East Main Street. When coming to Gentry on Highway 59, turn west on Main Street where the brown rock Gentry Bank (with the LED sign) sits on the corner. Travel west until you come to a stop light (three blocks) and the library is the two story red brick restored building on the south side of the street. You can park on Main Street or in the parking lot behind the library.

Results from a recent survey will also be reviewed at the meeting. The need for growers to unite is more evident than ever before. If you are a member, please come. If you are not a member, please come and join. Growers must stay united to have a voice!

By Robert J. Smith Friday, February 19, 2010 TULSA — Defense attorneys on Thursday criticized Oklahoma for asking a federal judge to cut poultry manure’s use in the Illinois River watershed when the state has the ability to do it on its own but has not changed it. Gary Weeks, who represents Springdale-based George’s Inc., made an impassioned plea to U.S. District Judge Greg Frizzell during arguments that closed a 50-day trial to determine if sixpoultry companies have polluted the watershed with the manure. Weeks told the judge it’s wrong for Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson to ask Frizzell to limit the manure’s use to fields where phosphorus is below 65 pounds per acre across the watershed that includes portions of Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas.

Published in the Tulsa World online. By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS Associated Press Writer Published: 12/9/2009 12:32 PM Last Modified: 12/9/2009 2:32 PM Oklahoma’s pollution case against the Arkansas poultry industry suffered another setback Wednesday, when a judge blocked the state from introducing soil test records that reportedly showed high phosphorus levels at 50 chicken farms. Citing fairness, U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell instead ordered Oklahoma to hand over the complete soil test records for the operations going back to 1998, when the record-keeping began. “I want to see the history,” Frizzell said, siding with poultry company attorneys who accused the state of “cherry-picking” tests showing higher pollution levels. “That’s why I want to see all the records, because they may cut either way here.”
