Farmers are an easy target - editorial
Keith Morgan writes a letter to the editor published March 8, 2006 in the Daily Oklahoman. We urge all producers and agriculturist to contine to write letters to the editors and talk to the news media telling the farmers' side of the story.
An easy target
Farmers don't intentionally pollute their own water. We depend on clean water for our living. Oklahoma farmers have the most stringent laws in the nation concerning poultry farmers. Farmers aren't breaking any laws, yet the industry is being sued by Attorney General Drew Edmondson. Edmondson would have you believe we're dumping poultry litter into our streams and lakes. Not true.
American agriculture is in danger of being moved from the U.S. because of the greed of a few people. Farmers are an easy target because we represent less than 1 percent of the population. I don't want to depend on other countries for my food. I want my children to have the same safe and economical food supply that we now enjoy.
Let's continue to feed ourselves here in the land of the free. We need safe food and water. There has to be a balance, and we all need to do our part to protect the environment. A lawsuit isn't the answer.
