Litter hauling grants available

by bevsaunders last modified 01-14 -2006 18:46

If you are a poultry producer with litter to sell, there are some options. In Oklahoma and Arkansas, growers and haulers may receive grants for litter that is moved outside the nutrient-sensitive watersheds and applied by certified applicators on row crops, pasture, forage or forestlands. You must contact Sheri Herron of BMP’s to sign up for the program before moving the litter to qualify for the hauling grants. BMP’s toll-free number is 866-304-2784.

Litter buyers and sellers can also go to www.poultrywaste.okstate.edu for information complied by Oklahoma State University. There is also a lot of other helpful information on that site for poultry producers.

Some funds could be available at both Arkansas and Oklahoma. To see if you qualify, contact the NRCS office in your county.

Poultry Partners would also like to encourage the “redistribution” of litter. If you believe your neighbors could use the litter, encourage them to get the necessary soil tests and paperwork done as soon as possible. The soil tests are good for one year. This will ensure that the paperwork is in order when clean out time rolls around. This could be a win/win for you and your neighbors if you need to sell and they need to buy. In most cases, poultry litter is a bargain compared to commercial fertilizers.
